What could be causing a 4 month old puppy hair loss? Vet couldn't find any cause for it (ie mit

I'm thinking about adopting a 4 month old pound puppy, but the pound wanted to let me know the dog has hair loss. They couldn't find any cause for it (ie mites, disease) but wanted to make sure we were okay with it. They said we probably would need to follow up with the vet about it. The dog is an underweight stray mixed breed (not quite emaciated) and around 4 to 5 months old. Hair loss is even throughout the dogs body, mainly just thinning, with no patches. What could be causing this? Could it be a result of malnutition?

That is odd. Sounds like the dog needs to see a good Vet.

although it is normally patchy your dog may just suffer from alapecia. (spelling)

sometimes stress, worms, poor nutrition or something in the environment can also cause hairloss
Malnutrition, grain intolerance, diet change, allergies and several other hard to detect issues come to mind. My dog has excessive shedding due to allergies. Speak to your vet about it and then get a grain free high quality food (or start him on raw).
Could be malnutrition, could be allergies. If you want to adopt this puppy, don't let his appearance change your mind.
dachshunds sometimes get hair loss on their ears for no apparent reason

greyhounds get hair loss on their legs, sides, butt and chest. Then it grow back again darker. Nobody seems to know why this is.

Maybe she has that type of harmless hair loss.
I sure could be malnutritioned, or now that he's eating it could be a wheat allergy, or something like that. Get him it could be nerves as well. But take him to YOUR vet when you get him as anyone should a new dog or puppy with in 48 hours and get a 2nd opinion. Good luck and Bless you for saving a life
Yes it could be a result of malnutrition, or an allergy. Perhaps an allergy to shampoo- or a cleaning product in the pound- that is quite common with dogs. I would make sure the dog is eating properly, and maybe switch to baby shampoo for a while- you might ask your vet if your dog needs supplements to fight the malnutrition and maybe hair loss.
Is the pup chewing or scratching? It sure sounds like mites, most likely demodex. This client a few yrs. back had this problems vet after vet, bloodwork, allergies tests, skin scarping and all this poor dog was just miserable. Anyway just because they didn't find the mite they didn't treat for it and and the sings were there. She found us, and this was his last chance if we couldn't help her dog she was going to euth. due to his suffering. (and he was) anyways we took, (poor dog) another scarping and found (you guessed it) nothing. The doctor treated for demodex with ivermectin, gave him Benadrly, used advantage and special shampoo. Tell you what, what difference in just a few days, that was it he got better week after week. You must think of cost, it'snot cheap. I'm not sure what's wrong with the pup, but it's not normale and talk to a vet first.
This dog could have allergies to fleas, food, etc. It could be a metabolic problem or something else. Sounds like they cleared it as far as mites and that is good. A follow up with your Vet and a healthy diet for skin and coat- no artificial dyes, wheat or corn, may help. Also, ask your Vet about sprinkling Brewer's Yeast on his food and adding a Vet approved capsule like 3V Caps Skin Formulation or Norwegian Cod liver oil. Our dogs take Vet approved capsules with fish oil and flax oil.
