The way Windows launches these files is through associations with programs. (Plug-ins). You need the program installed in order to view a file within another program.
Meaning, without Windows Media Player installed on your computer, IE will not be able to launch Windows Media Player to play a file.
To complicate things for you, you should still be able to play the media file if you have something like Real Player or Quicktime installed.
